So you've got an old scanner and want to make it work under Snow Leopard? MacDiddy to the rescue, even if the instructions are slightly incomplete - here go the complete ones:
Prerequisites:
Rosetta must be installed; if it isn't installed already, follow these instructions. Not sure if Rosetta is already installed? Perform the following steps:
- Launch terminal: Applications->Utilities->Terminal
- Type this into the Terminal window:
ls -l /usr/libexec/oah/
and hit enter.
If "translate" shows up you've got Rosetta installed.

Rosetta is installed.
Installation:
- Download and install CanoScan Toolbox (get it from Canon here, or if it isn't available anymore, locally here). Disregard the fact that Canon says it works only up to MacOS 10.4.
- Download and install the LiDE 80 driver (get it from Canon here, or if it isn't available anymore, locally here). Unfortunately the installer doesn't quite do his job, so a couple of files have to copied manually:
- Mount the LiDE driver installation disk image (LiDE80_7252MXEN.dmg) if it isn't still mounted, and navigate to the the "Into Users_shared" folder, where you will find a folder called "CanoScanLiDE80". Copy this folder to your hard disk to Macintosh HD -> Users -> Shared.
- If you are using Photoshop, perform step 5 of Macdiddy's instructions.
- Reboot the machine.
- With the scanner attached, launch the CanoScan Toolbox and scan away.

Many thanks for your efforts in sharing this info. Yes, your info is more complete for dummies like me. I was going in circles earlier on. Cheers again.
Lord thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
You are the best thing since sliced bread! You are a God! You ARE A DEITY!!
You saved me from buying a new scanner!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Death to Canon!! How dare they not share this information with us!! How dare they set it up so that we will have to buy a new scanner just because we have upgraded our OS!! Will never buy Canon again! Evil!!
hello christoph, thanks a lot for your help. It is a shame, that Canon is not able to help there clients. I tried it several times with different Canon people, no luck.... and then... a swiss in itlay knows the solution.
It works -- I hope a lot of "Snow Leopard" will find your howto.
Thanks and greatings from Switzerland
When installing the Canon LIDE 80 driver, it asks for an install location. Which folder do I put it in? Thanks.
Richard, the driver itself shouldn't ask for an install location - try following the instructions in LiDE80quickstartguide-e.pdf (which is available here) if you have any doubts or problems.
